Desert Studio

2013


Introduction

My collaboration with product designer Alyaa Al Gharby began in 2013. We worked together on an experimental project we called Photographic Products.

Our experiment sought to integrate the photographic process of making Collodian wet plates with the craftsmanship of product design. I converted a portable wooden darkroom into a large format camera, in order to photograph directly onto the metal sheets designed by Al Gharby. We invited Egyptian families to have their portraits taken in our desert studio, which we equipped with our grandparents’ furniture.

مقدمة

بدأ تعاوني مع المصممة علياء الغربي في عام ٢٠١٣ عندما عملنا معاً على مشروع أطلقنا عليه إسم المنتجات الفوتوغرافية. من خلال هذا المشروع التجريبي، سعينا إلى دمج عملية التصوير الفوتوغرافي القديمة بالكولوديون الرطب مع حرفية مجال تصميم المنتج. قمت من جانبي بتصميم وتركيب غرفة خشبية للتحميض سهلة الحمل تعمل في ذات الوقت ككاميرا. بينما صممت الغربي الألواح البلاطية التي أردنا التصوير مباشرة على سطحها. قمنا بعد ذلك بدعوة العائلات المصرية لإلتقاط صورهم في الاستوديو الصحراوي الخاص بنا والذي قمنا بتجهيزه بأثاث أجدادنا.

Desert Studio Dialogues

2020


Introduction

We revived our collaboration for a brief period of time in 2020 as we engaged in a photographic dialogue documenting the changes inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic on our lives abroad; me in the Netherlands and she in Canada. Themes of domestic solitude, motherhood, and a need to connect with nature run through our visual conversation, shedding light on our heightened self-reflection during the pandemic. Our exchange began on the 1st of April and ended on the 6th of June.

مقدمة

أحيينا تعاوننا مرة أخرة لفترة وجيزة في عام ٢٠٢٠ حيث قمنا بحوار فوتوغرافي بيننا نوثق من خلاله التغييرات التي أحدثتها جائحة الكوفيت ١٩ على حياتنا. كنت في هولندا بينما كانت الغربي في كندا. من خلال محادثتنا المرئية تظهر مواضيع مثل العزلة المنزلية، الأمومة، والرغبة في التواصل مع الطبية ملقية بالتالي الضوء علي زيادة تفكرنا الذاتي خلال الجائحة. بدأ تبادلنا في الأول من أبريل وانتهى في السادس من يونيو.
