Desert Studio

[ 2013 - 2020 ]

INTRODUCTION

My collaboration with product designer Alyaa Al Gharby began in 2013 as we worked on what we called Photographic Products. With our experiment, we sought to integrate the photographic process of making Collodian wet plates with the craftsmanship of product design. I converted a portable wooden darkroom into a large format camera, in order to photograph directly onto the metal sheets designed by Al Gharby. We invited Egyptian families to have their portraits taken in our desert studio, which we equipped with our grandparents’ furniture.

INTRODUCTION

We revived our collaboration for a brief period of time in 2020 with a photographic dialogue documenting the changes inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic on our lives. I was in Delft, NL and she was in Toronto, CA. Our exchange began on the 1st of April and ended on the 6th of June 2020.
