New Perspectives (Podcast Episode)

2022

Introduction

During my residency at the Sainsbury Centre, I was invited to contribute to their podcast series, New Perspectives. In this episode, I reflect on my encounter with an ancient Egyptian funerary object displayed behind a glass vitrine in the museum and also appearing in a 1970 photograph of Sir Robert and Lisa Sainsbury’s art collection in their house.

That object, a funerary pectoral which was once suspended around the neck of an ancient Egyptian mummified body or stitched into their sacred wrappings, becomes the starting point of my contemplations around the art museum’s mode of display and the public viewing practices it fosters and perpetuates.
